The US Departments of Energy and Agriculture have awarded 10 grants totaling $12.2 million for projects designed to improve special crops to be grown for biofuels by increasing their yield, quality and ability to adapt to extreme environments. Researchers will rely on the most advanced techniques of modern genomics to develop breeding and other strategies. The research will be conducted on switchgrass, poplar, Miscanthus and Brachypodium, among other plants.

The US Department of Energy has signed an agreement with the Indian Department of Atomic Energy to help advance scientific discovery in the field of accelerator and particle detector research. The agreement aims to expand research collaborations in superconducting radiofrequency accelerator technology, heavy ion physics, and particle detector development at DOE's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced today the winners of the 2009 E.O. Lawrence Award for their outstanding contributions in research and development supporting the US Department of Energy and its missions. The six winners named today will receive a gold medal, a citation and $50,000.

The Department of Energy today announced major funding for 37 ambitious research projects. The projects, which are receiving an average of approximately $4 million each, span the energy sector, including potentially transformative innovations in energy storage, biofuels, carbon capture, renewable power, building efficiency, vehicles and other energy technology areas. The $151 million in funding is being awarded through the Department's recently-formed Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu has named Dr. John Bannister Goodenough and Dr. Siegfried S. Hecker as the winners of the Enrico Fermi Award, one of the most prestigious science and technology awards awarded by the US Government. The presidential award carries an honorarium of $375,000, which will be shared equally, and a gold medal.
