The US Department of Energy today welcomed the United Kingdom as the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership's twenty-first partner. GNEP, a voluntary international partnership, aims to safely and securely expand nuclear power worldwide while responsibly managing nuclear waste and reducing proliferation risks. US Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman met with UK Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Rt. Hon. John Hutton prior to the UK signing the GNEP Statement of Principles in Washington, DC.

Secretary Bodman meets with Qatari officials to promote energy expansion efforts

On his fourth stop of a six-nation swing through the Middle East and Europe, US Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman today met with Qatari Amir H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Abdullah Al-Attiyah to discuss energy sources.

The US Department of Energy's Office of Science today released a comprehensive update of its landmark 2003 publication, Facilities for the Future of Science: A Twenty-Year Outlook, that shows the agency has made "significant progress" in deploying the scientific facilities and instruments that the United States needs to capture world scientific leadership, extend the frontiers of science and support the department's missions.

Energy department selects 3 Bioenergy Research Centers for $375 million in federal funding

The Department of Energy has selected three new Bioenergy Research Centers that will be located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Madison, Wisconsin; and near Berkeley, California. A major research focus will be to understand how to reengineer biological processes to develop new, more efficient methods for converting the cellulose in plant material into ethanol or other biofuels that serve as a substitute for gasoline. The three centers will receive up to $375 million in federal funding.

Energy and Agriculture Departments provide $8.3 million in funding for biofuels research

DOE and USDA have selected 11 projects for awards totaling $8.3 million for biobased fuels research. The fundamental research in biomass genomics will provide the scientific foundation to facilitate and accelerate the use of woody plant tissue for bioenergy and biofuels. In this second year of the program, new research projects on cordgrass, rice, switchgrass, sorghum, poplar and perennial grasses join the portfolio of research on poplar, alfalfa, sorghum and wheat.
