Secretary of Energy announces seven E.O. Lawrence Award Winners

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham today named the seven winners of the 2004 E.O. Lawrence Award. Each winner will receive a gold medal, a citation and $50,000. The award is given in seven categories for outstanding contributions in the broadly defined field of atomic energy. The categories are: chemistry, environmental science and technology, life sciences, materials research, national security, nuclear technology, and physics.

SPEAR3 project wins DOE award for excellence

Fusion science centers funded at University of Maryland/UCLA and University of Rochester

The Energy Department has selected the University of Maryland/UCLA and the University of Rochester to host two new Fusion Science Centers. The universities will establish academic centers of excellence that will focus on fundamental issues in fusion plasma science. The first center will study the interaction of microscale and macroscale dynamics in key plasma physics problems. Researchers at the second center will develop an understanding of the physics of creating extreme states of matter.

Ground broken for nanotechnology center at Sandia and Los Alamos labs

The new Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories moved closer to reality with two groundbreaking ceremonies this week. The $76 million center is one of five new Nanoscale Science Research Centers. The center's primary objective will be to develop the scientific principles that govern the performance and integration of nanoscale materials, thereby building the foundations for future nanotechnologies.

Science.gov 2.0 offers groundbreaking, user-friendly technology enhancements to the interagency science portal. Science.gov provides the unique ability to search across 30 databases as well as across 1,700 Web sites. Now Version 2.0 will search 47 million pages of government R&D results and present the result to the patron in relevancy-ranked order.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop DOE leadership-class computing capability for science

The Department of Energy will grant Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its development partners, Cray Inc., IBM Corp. and Silicon Graphics Inc., $25 million in funding to build a 50 teraflop science research supercomputer. The supercomputer will be open to the scientific community for research. A 100-teraflop Cray system is planned for 2006, with the potential to increase to 250 teraflops in 2007.
