Low dose radiation research grants awarded
DOE/US Department of EnergyGrant and Award Announcement
The Department of Energy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have jointly funded six basic research projects intended to expand our understanding of the health effects of low doses of ionizing radiation. The six three-year projects will be funded for a total of $6.69 million.

Seven E.O. Lawrence Award winners named
DOE/US Department of EnergyGrant and Award Announcement
Seven researchers from Berkeley Lab, Livermore Lab, North Carolina State University, Sandia Labs/UNM, Stanford Univ./SLAC and TIGR were named winners of the E.O. Lawrence Award. The award is given in seven categories for outstanding contributions in the field of atomic energy, broadly defined. Each winner will receive a gold medal, a citation and $25,000.

Scientific discovery through advanced computing

Fifty-one projects will receive a total of $57 million this fiscal year to develop the scientific computing software and hardware infrastructure needed to use terascale computers to advance fundamental research in several areas related to the department's missions, including climate modeling, fusion energy sciences, chemical sciences, nuclear astrophysics, high energy physics and high performance computing.

Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers

President George W. Bush and his science advisor Jack Marburger honored 60 of the Nation's brightest researchers with the 2001 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE, presented to the recipients in a ceremony at the White House on July 12, 2002, is the highest governmental honor received by outstanding scientists and engineers at the outset of their independent careers.

DOE's Office of Science sponsors 2001 National Medal of Science winners

Fourteen scientists and one engineer will be awarded the National Medal of Science at the White House on June 13, 2002. Eight of these premier researchers are currently funded or have received funding support from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science during their careers.

Earliest hominid discovery not the missing link — But close

The discovery of fossil remains of a hominid that lived in what is now Ethiopia between 5.2 and 5.8 million years ago are the subject of two articles in the July 12 issue of Nature. Hominid refers to the family of primates that includes all species on the "human" side of the evolutionary tree after the split from chimpanzees.
