Sandia 2023 economic impact reaches record high
DOE/Sandia National LaboratoriesALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories’ economic impact for fiscal year 2023 reached an all-time high of nearly $4.8 billion, which was $559 million more than in 2022.
The impact is evident in the 1,200 new jobs added in the last year, the $114 million in gross receipts taxes paid to the state and the $1.08 billion paid to the small business suppliers who help provide critical components for Sandia to fulfill its mission.
Chasing the light: Sandia study finds new clues about warming in the Arctic
DOE/Sandia National LaboratoriesBusiness Announcement
The Arctic, Earth’s icy crown, is experiencing a climate crisis like no other. It’s heating up at a furious pace — four times faster than the rest of our planet. Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories are pulling back the curtain on the reduction of sunlight reflectivity, or albedo, which is supercharging the Arctic’s warming.
Society of Women Engineers celebrates Sandia Labs employees
DOE/Sandia National LaboratoriesGrant and Award Announcement
Women engineers at Sandia National Laboratories achieved significant recognition in 2023 from the Society of Women Engineers. These accolades included Advocating Women in Engineering, Distinguished New Engineer and 10 patent recognition awards.
Using a fiber optic cable to study Arctic seafloor permafrost
DOE/Sandia National LaboratoriesReports and Proceedings
Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories are using an existing fiber optic cable off Oliktok Point on the North Slope of Alaska to study the conditions of the Arctic seafloor up to 20 miles from shore. Christian Stanciu, project lead, will present their latest findings on Friday, Dec. 15 at AGU’s Fall Meeting in San Francisco.

First hints of nuclear fission in cosmos revealed by models, observations
DOE/Los Alamos National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
The elements above iron on the periodic table are thought to be created in cataclysmic explosions like the merger of two neutron stars or in rare classes of supernovae. New research suggests fission may operate in the cosmos during the creation of the heavy elements. Combing through data on a variety of elements that reside in very old stars, researchers have found a potential signature of fission, indicating that nature is likely to produce superheavy nuclei beyond the heaviest elements on the periodic table.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Two Sandia National Laboratories employees will soon join the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics class of 2024 as associate fellows.
New tool models viability of closed-loop geothermal systems
DOE/Sandia National LaboratoriesPeer-Reviewed Publication
Sandia National Laboratories researchers have used computer models of closed-loop geothermal systems to determine if they would be economically viable sources of renewable energy. They found that the cost of drilling would need to decrease significantly to hit cost targets.
