20 years of research at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory

Twenty years ago, on Oct. 14, 2003, dignitaries gathered to declare the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) open for experiments. The NSRL facility, built by NASA at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, makes use of powerful particle beams to simulate the effects of space radiation. At its start, it had one straightforward goal: Help scientists understand the risks astronauts would face during long-term missions to the moon or Mars.

Brookhaven Lab Statement on Nuclear Science Advisory Committee 2023 Recommendations for Nuclear Physics Research

On Oct. 4, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and National Science Foundation's (NSF) Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) presented its “Long Range Plan” of recommendations to advance U.S. nuclear physics research over the next decade. We are excited to see that completing the science program at RHIC is included in the Plan’s highest recommendation, and that the “expeditious completion” of the EIC is the Plan’s “highest priority for facility construction.”

Developing the next-generation of radiation safety professionals

Brookhaven National Laboratory and Queensborough Community College (QCC) have proposed a unique, hands-on certificate program to train future radiation protection professionals. This project is now being funded through the Developing Next Generation Radiation Safety Professionals (DNGRSP) grant awarded by the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (MSIPP).
