Brookhaven Lab collaboration determines the atomic structure of a key enzyme called a 'biological blowtorch'

A team of scientists working at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory has determined the atomic structure of a key enzyme: cytochrome P450cam in the bacterium Pseudomonas putida. The enzyme performs several important chemical jobs in the body, including synthesizing estrogen and detoxifying chemicals as they enter the body.

Scientists capture first images of how x-rays damage proteins

While using high-intensity X-rays to “photograph” the chemical reactions of an enzyme, an international team of scientists found that the X-rays were systematically destroying their target in a highly specific way. This accidental discovery of “weak links” in proteins may yield future measures to prevent radiation damage and will have implications for the use of X-rays to decipher molecular structures.

Brookhaven Lab and CTI, Inc. sign CRADA to develop a noninvasive blood monitor for PET imaging

The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and CTI, Inc., of Knoxsville, Tennessee, have signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to develop a noninvasive blood monitor to be used in medical imaging. Information on metabolic rate, which the new device will help to measure, is important fo diagnosing cancer, epilepsy and cardiac disorders.

Brookhaven Lab chemist shares the 2000 Wolf Prize in Physics with University of Tokyo scientist for research on neutrinos

Raymond Davis Jr., whose career as a chemist spans 52 years at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, will share the 2000 Wolf Prize in Physics with Masatoshi Koshiba, University of Tokyo, Japan. The Wolf Foundation has recognized the scientists "for their pioneering observations of astronomical phenomena by detection of neutrinos."

Brookhaven Lab expert helps date flute thought to be oldest playable musical instrument

New Biochemical Technology Ready To Retrieve, Purify Heaviest Crude Oil

A new technique based on specially bred bacteria promises to help the oil industry recover and purify some of the world's heaviest crude oil. Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory developed the technology by raising natural bacteria that can break down large oil molecules and remove impurities. The technique has just been licensed for commercial development.
