Scientists at Brookhaven Lab have discovered a long-predicted magnetic state of matter called an antiferromagnetic excitonic insulator — broadly speaking, a novel type of magnet. Understanding the connections between electrons' "spin" and charge in such materials could have potential for realizing new technologies.

Chemists describe the key features of a catalyst that determine its selectivity for transforming CO2 and ethane (C2H6) into synthesis gas (useful for generating electricity or making liquid fuels) or, alternatively, ethylene (a building block for making paints, plastics, and other polymers). The findings could inform the rational design of catalysts to yield desired products.

Abhay Deshpande, director of Electron-Ion Collider science at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University, has been named a 2021 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Now a team at Brookhaven Lab has identified a new approach using a common industrial catalyst that can complete the conversion effectively both with and without water. The findings suggest strategies for improving catalysts for the water-free conversion.

A process for making hybrid organic-inorganic materials (photoresists) sensitive to extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) light is one of two technologies that won the 2021 National Labs Accelerator Pitch Event. This technology—developed at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory—could be used for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing by EUV lithography.
