PET scans reveal estrogen-producing hotspots in human brain

A study at Brookhaven National Laboratory has demonstrated that a molecule "tagged" with a radioactive form of carbon can be used to image aromatase, an enzyme responsible for the production of estrogen, in the human brain. The research uncovered that the regions of the brain where aromatase is concentrated may be unique to humans.

New beam source for Brookhaven accelerators

Ritalin improves brain function, task performance in cocaine abusers

A brain-scanning study reveals that an oral dose of methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin, improves impaired brain function and enhances cognitive performance in people who are addicted to cocaine. Key advance in understanding 'pseudogap' phase in high-Tc superconductors

Scientists create nano-patterned superconducting thin films

First images of heavy electrons in action

Using a microscope designed to image the arrangement and interactions of electrons in crystals, scientists have captured the first images of electrons that appear to take on extraordinary mass under certain extreme conditions. The technique reveals the origin of an unusual electronic phase transition in one particular material, and opens the door to further explorations of the properties and functions of so-called heavy fermions.
