Scientists detect 'fingerprint' of high-temp superconductivity above transition temperature

A team of US and Japanese scientists has shown for the first time that the spectroscopic "fingerprint" of high-temperature superconductivity remains intact well above the super chilly temperatures at which these materials carry current with no resistance. This confirms that certain conditions necessary for superconductivity exist at the warmer temperatures that would make these materials practical for energy-saving applications -- if scientists can figure out how to get the current flowing.

Brookhaven Lab and Hybridyne Imaging Technologies Inc. win R&D 100 award

The US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and Hybridyne Imaging Technologies Inc. of Toronto, Canada, have won a 2009 R&D 100 Award for developing a compact gamma camera for high-resolution imaging of prostate cancer. The camera system, called ProxiScan, is a nuclear medical instrument that can localize cancer tissue in the prostate gland in detail at an early stage, which is important for the successful diagnosis and early treatment of the potentially deadly disease.

2 Brookhaven Lab scientists receive Presidential Early Career Awards

X-rays for early Alzheimer's disease detection

Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory have demonstrated a new, highly detailed X-ray imaging technique that could be developed into a method for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. The technique has previously been used to look at tumors in breast tissue and cartilage in human knee and ankle joints, but this study is the first to test its ability to visualize a class of minuscule plaques that are a hallmark feature of Alzheimer's disease.

Plant microbe shares features with drug-resistant pathogen

An international team of scientists has discovered extensive similarities between a strain of bacteria commonly associated with plants and one increasingly linked to opportunistic infections in hospital patients. CT scan to help scientists diagnose role of clouds in climate

Compact cancer-therapy particle-delivery system patented

As part of an effort to make high-precision particle cancer therapy accessible to more patients, a physicist at the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory has developed a simpler, less-expensive gantry design for delivering tumor-killing particle beams. Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that manages the Lab for DOE, has applied for a US nonprovisional patent on the design, which is now available for licensing and commercial development.

Details of bacterial 'injection' system revealed

New details of the composition and structure of a needle-like protein complex on the surface of certain bacteria may help scientists develop new strategies to thwart infection.
