Looking for clues about how proteins talk to each other

Proteins perform distinct and very well-defined tasks, but little is known about how interactions among them are structured at the cellular level. Now, two physicists reveal that -- at least in yeast cells -- these interactions are not random, but well organized. This result is published in the May 3, 2002 issue of Science.

Brookhaven Lab researchers develop a new method for producing electrodes

Using nanoscale materials, researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory have developed a method to make electrodes that are suitable for use in rechargeable lithium ion batteries and other electronic devices. Because so many new and different materials can be made with this versatile method, it should be capable of producing electrodes that are more efficient and durable than those in use today.

Brookhaven Lab scientist wins Environmental Mutagen Society Award

Richard Setlow, a senior biophysicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been named the recipient of the 2002 Environmental Mutagen Society Award. He is being recognized for his research contributions to the field of environmental mutagenesis, which involves the study of how various agents in the environment, such as chemicals and radiation, lead to DNA damage and how that damage is repaired.

Brain-imaging study offers clues to inhalant abuse

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory -- inspired by schoolchildren who wanted to know more about "huffing" (abusing inhalants) -- have produced the first-ever images showing what parts of the brain and body are most affected by toluene, a commonly inhaled solvent. Findings show that solvents target same brain areas as other addictive drugs.
