ORNL's powerful tools for scientific discovery
DOE/Oak Ridge National Laboratory
ORNL offers 5.5 teraflops of computing to advance scientific discovery. Some ORNL computational research is funded by DOE’s Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing Program.

ORNL technology gets nod from EPA
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Prospects for cleaning up contaminated sites around the country are better because of a technology and procedure developed at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and recently accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency. The technology, which consists of direct sampling and analysis of volatile organic compounds in water, soil, gas and air, requires little if any sample preparation and yields results in three to five minutes.

ORNL assisting in effort to make skies safer
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
A simple boarding pass could safeguard air travelers if an explosives detection system being developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Mass Spec Analytical is adopted. With the mass spectrometry-based instrument, a passenger’s ticket would become a passive sampling device that detects even a billionth of a gram of explosives such as nitroglycerine and TNT.

ORNL material could help pilots keep their cool
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Staying cool under fire could take on a new meaning with a personal cooling system being developed at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The system takes advantage of high thermal conductivity graphite foam, an ORNL material that boasts thermal conductivity five times greater than aluminum. As envisioned by James Klett, the system would provide chilled air to circulate within the suit and helmet of a fighter pilot.

Preliminary evidence suggests possible nuclear emissions during experiments
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Russian Academy of Sciences have reported results that suggest the possibility of nuclear reactions during the explosive collapse of bubbles in liquid, a process known as cavitation.
