ORNL weigh-in-motion system could increase military mobility
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Armed with an automated weigh-in-motion system being
developed at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL), U.S. military forces could increase
mobility and decrease mistakes when loading vehicles on
transport planes and ships.

Anti-electrons help researchers find nano-surface defects in gold
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Tiny defects in the surface of common material - from silicon
to steel -- determine the properties of material and how it
can be used. Unfortunately, many of these pores, called
vacancies, are so small they cannot be accurately measured.
Today an international team of researchers at the Department
of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is applying
the use of positrons, or anti-electrons, to the task of
measurement.

ENERGY - Solar energy could get a megaboost, effectively
gaining a three-fold improvement over conventional
technology... ENVIRONMENT - Increasingly stringent standards
for sulfur emissions from vehicles could be met with a new
process... ELECTRONICS - An ultra-clean ozone-collecting
process with applications for producing revolutionary
semiconductors... MILITARY - An automated weigh-in-motion
system being developed.

ORNL helping industry establish value of cool roofs
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Light-colored roofs that reflect the sun’s heat can save
consumers money, and the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge
National Laboratory (ORNL) is working with the roofing
industry to predict the amount of savings and establish
standards to help consumers compare materials.
