G-Zero update
DOE/Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility
In research performed in Hall C,
nuclear physicists have found that
strange quarks do contribute to the
structure of the proton. This result
indicates that, just as previous experiments
have hinted, strange quarks
in the proton's quark-gluon sea contribute
to a proton's properties. The
result comes from work performed by
the G-Zero collaboration, an international
group of 108 physicists from
19 institutions, and was presented at a
Jefferson Lab physics seminar on June
17.

Free-electron laser targets fat

Fat may have finally met its match: laser light. Researchers at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) have shown, for the first time, that a laser can preferentially heat lipid-rich tissues, or fat, in the body without harming the overlying skin.

Jefferson Lab builds first single crystal single cell accelerating cavity

Jefferson Lab scientists have, for the first time, successfully fabricated and tested a single cell accelerating cavity made from a single crystal of niobium in the same shape as the low-loss design proposed as an improvement to the baseline for the International Linear Collider (ILC). In preliminary tests, the superconducting cavity's accelerating gradient exceeded the ILC specification of 28 MV/m and eventual goal of 35 MV/m.

Five Virginia universities unanimously approved the nomination of Anthony W. Thomas, Chief Scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Va., to a distinguished professorship at The College of William and Mary. Thomas is a theoretical nuclear physicist and the Chief Scientist, and he also heads the Lab's Theory Group.

Jefferson Lab scientists build small-animal imager for German Cancer Research Center

This week three Jefferson Lab Detector Group members travel to Heidelberg, Germany, to assemble and bring on-line a small-animal imaging device the group developed and built for the German Cancer Research Center (GCRC), an institute similar to the National Cancer Institute within the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

JLab, College of W&M researchers study radiation blockers

Scientists have found that a dose five times higher than the FDA-recommended dosage of potassium iodide in the event of a nuclear accident is needed to protect small animals effectively from radioactive iodide in medical imaging procedures. The long-term animal nuclear imaging project is being conducted by a collaboration of biology and physics researchers from the Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab and The College of William & Mary (CWM).
