Sky-high icebergs carried boulders from the Rockies to in south-central Washington

Geologists have uncovered a scene in the Pasco Basin west of the Columbia River in Washington state that shows how boulders piggybacked icebergs from what is now Montana and came to rest at elevations as high as 1,200 feet. There may not be anyplace else in the world where there are so many rocks that rafted in on icebergs.

Saliva spits out information on chemical exposure

Home testing of saliva to measure personal hormone levels is gaining popularity, with dozens of companies offering do-it-yourself, mail-in test kits. Battelle scientists at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory envision a day when it may be nearly as easy to detect chemical exposure or even nerve gas poisoning -- simply by analyzing a victim's saliva. And the results would be almost immediate.

PNNL wins record $10.2 million NIH grant for proteomics center

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has won a five-year, $10.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to support a center for basic research in proteomics, PNNL announced today. It is the largest NIH grant in the Department of Energy lab's 38-year history.
