Bees The Buzz In Landmine Detection

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory engineers have modified commercially available radio-frequency tags, which store information and can be used to track items such as clothing, to serve as high-tech "backpacks" for bees to see if they can be used to locate millions of landmines scattered worldwide.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium , which recognizes excellence in technology transfer, has honored Pacific Northwest National Laboratory researchers for their efforts in moving two technologies out of the laboratory and into the marketplace. The technologies - an environmentally friendly process for cleaning clothing and mechanical parts and a new type of radiation sensor - are among 15 honored this year by the FLC.

Psychology normally isn’t associated with fisheries biology, but the behavior of fish could be an important factor in restoring endangered salmon stocks in the Columbia and Snake rivers. Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have developed tools to study how fish behave and to evaluate fish bypass systems at dams.

Farming and snow skiing may not be the same in the Northwest if carbon dioxide levels double as projected by 2080, according to a scenario produced by a new regional climate change model. The model, created by researchers at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, indicates the Northwest will have significantly warmer and wetter winters in 80 years unless carbon dioxide emissions are reduced greatly.

Tracking A Legacy Of Waste In The West Siberian Basin

Fifty years ago in the West Siberian Basin, Russian scientists began discharging liquid radioactive waste to rivers and reservoirs and injecting waste into the groundwater. Scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory now are leading the United States' contribution to the joint contaminant transport modeling project. Findings are expected to influence remediation strategies at the three Russian sites.

U.S. Energy Department Opens Climate Research

On November 20, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will dedicate a long-term, climate research station on Nauru in the Central Pacific Ocean. The Nauru facility will collect information needed to better understand climate change, focusing on the way the sun's energy is transmitted, absorbed and reflected in the tropics and on the role of clouds in heating and cooling the atmosphere.

Center Widens Regional Role In International Security
