An about-face on electrical conductivity at the interface

Researchers are challenging the reasoning that many use to explain conductivity at the interface of complex oxides. The alternative theory states that atoms at the interface mix and rearrange when the junction between the two oxides is formed. This new knowledge could be applied to novel electronic applications that cannot work with conventional semiconductors such as silicon.

Catalyst that makes hydrogen gas breaks speed record

Looking to nature for their muse, researchers have used a common protein to guide the design of a material that can make energy-storing hydrogen gas. The synthetic material works 10 times faster than the original protein found in water-dwelling microbes, the researchers from Pacific Northwest National Lab report in the August 12 issue of the journal Science, clocking in at 100,000 molecules of hydrogen gas every second.

Human influence on the 21st century climate: 1 possible future for the atmosphere

New computer modeling work in the journal Climatic Change shows that by 2100, if society wants to limit carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to less than 40 percent higher than it is today, the lowest cost option is to use every available means of reducing emissions. This includes more nuclear and renewable energy, choosing electricity over fossil fuels, reducing emissions through technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide, and even using forests to store carbon.
