Deadly monkeypox virus might cause disease by breaking down lung tissue

A new study of an exotic, infectious virus that has caused three recent outbreaks in the United States reveals clues to how the virus might damage lungs during infection. The findings also suggest possible new ways to treat lung diseases in humans. Not only does the infection from monkeypox virus increase production of proteins involved in inflammation, but it decreases production of proteins that keep lung tissue intact and lubricated.

New clues to how cancer-related proteins plasmin, thrombin lose inhibition

A new technique that searches blood for the tiniest remnants of broken down proteins has revealed new information about how cells crank up cancer activators plasmin and thrombin. The results improve researchers' understanding of the mechanics of breast cancer and point to where to look for possible indicators of early disease. Appearing this week in PLoS ONE, the research shows previously unknown contributing factors to protease activation, which helps spread cancer.

Planar power

PNNL research shows a planar, or flat, sodium-beta battery can deliver 30 percent more power than its cylindrical counterpart. This could be a less expensive, safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries for storing wind and solar power on the electric grid.

Saving tropical forests: Value their carbon and improve farming technology

In a warming 21st century, tropical forests will be at risk from a variety of threats, especially the conversion to cropland to sustain a growing population. A new report this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition shows that crop productivity improvements and carbon emission limits together could prevent widespread tropical deforestation over the next 100 years -- but if relying on either one alone, the world is at risk of losing many of its tropical forests.

The sky is falling (less) onto Puget Sound

Looking for secrets to drug addiction in our blood

A new two-year, $850,000 study with the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Air Force's 59th Medical Wing hopes to find a better indicator of current or past use of illicit drugs. The US Department of Defense-funded study will map out drug breakdown products, proteins and other compounds made in response to the prescription painkiller hydrocodone, They hope future work will identify people prone to abusing drugs in the first place.
