Energy insecurity -- a weapon of mass disruption?
DOE/Pacific Northwest National LaboratoryBusiness Announcement
For years we've all heard the statistics -- and warnings -- about U.S. imports of oil and natural gas, for example, and our dependence on foreign sources. At a panel discussion today, energy and national security experts will discuss this and other related topics, including how geopolitics of energy security may require "kid gloves" diplomacy to get what we need.

Googling brain proteins with 3-D goggles
DOE/Pacific Northwest National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
The Allen Brain Atlas, a genome-wide map of the mouse brain on the Internet, has been hailed as "Google of the brain." The atlas now has a companion or the brain’s working molecules, a sort of pop-up book of the proteins, or proteome map, that those genes express.

Mileage from megawatts
DOE/Pacific Northwest National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
A new study finds that "off-peak" electricity production and transmission capacity could fuel 84 percent of the country's 220 million vehicles if they were plug-in hybrid electrics.
This is the first review of what the impacts would be of very high market penetrations of PHEVs. Researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory also evaluated the impact of PHEVs, on foreign oil imports, the environment, electric utilities and the consumer.

Nuclear energy and the 21st century
DOE/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
The world is entering a period of renewed interest and
growth in nuclear energy, driven by rising oil prices, growing
demand for electricity, new passively safe plant designs, and
low emissions of greenhouse gases, which some governments
need to meet Kyoto Protocol standards. The Kyoto Protocol
assigns mandatory targets for reducing greenhouse gas
emissions to signatory nations.

DOE/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
The Department of Energy has a new vision for residential
and commercial buildings in the United States -- net-zero energy
buildings that will produce as much energy as they consume.
