'Chemical dynamic' duo aids Navy

Big hopes for tiny, new hydrogen storage material

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have found a way to release hydrogen from a solid compound almost 100 times faster than was previously possible furthering hopes for a viable hydrogen storage medium. They will present their findings at the American Physical Society Meeting in Los Angeles on March 21, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in room 502B.

ICPB locks in license to improve plastics with corn

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board, ICPB, has signed its first commercial license with Battelle to produce a new plastic additive made from corn that offers a variety of commercial advantages. The compound, isosorbide, can be used to improve the properties of plastic materials such as bottles. Research has shown the corn-based isosorbide will make these plastic bottles more rigid and stronger than the regular plastic bottles.

Dropping nano-anchor

Researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., and the University of Washington say they can control the deposition of anchor molecules on a carbon nanotube, 10,000 times smaller than a human hair, without muting the nanotube's promising physical properties.
