Catching the cracks

Catching cracks in nuclear nozzles is no easy task when they are caused by normal stresses and corrosion inside a nuclear reactor. Approximately 70 nozzles per reactor allow control rod drive shafts to pass through the top of a reactor pressure vessel head so that the power level of the reactor can be controlled.

Climate change-related losses to agriculture in Washington's Yakima Valley will be between $92 million and $163 million a year, according to a study by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., presented Sunday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting. The study is one of the most detailed to date on global warming and its likely effect on human activity.

Pacific Northwest lab forms Institute for Interfacial Catalysis, names director
DOE/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory today launched an $8 million Institute for Interfacial Catalysis to explore the fundamental chemical changes on surfaces where catalytic reactions take place. The Department of Energy lab also announced the appointment of University of Texas at Austin chemist John M. "Mike" White as the institute's director.

Stanford selected as first regional center for DHS's national visual analytics work

Stanford University has been named the first Regional Visualization and Analytics Center to perform basic science and technology research to assist the Department of Homeland Security in identifying and thwarting terrorist threats to the nation.
The announcement was made today by the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which operates DHS's National Visualization and Analytics Center,TM or NVAC, in Richland.

Fleshing out the genome

Scientists describe a powerful new proteomics and bioinformatics method that integrates experimental and computational analyses to ascribe function to genes that had been termed "hypothetical" -- sequences that appear in the genome but whose biological purposes were previously unknown. The method not only portends a way to fill in the blanks in any organism's genome but also to compare the genomes of different organisms and their evolutionary relationship.
