(a) Time-resolved Schottky spectrum of 56Fe26+ at a beam energy of 116 MeV/u. Electron cooling is turned off at approximately 0.8 s. (b) Evolution of the peak center frequency and (c) peak area before sensitivity calibration, and (d) after sensitivity calibration, plotted as functions of time. Following the electron cooler shutdown, the frequency spread increases and the center frequency gradually shifts to lower values. Only after sensitivity calibration can the decay curve be accurately determined. The measured storage lifetime of 56Fe26+ at 116 MeV/u is 22(2) hours.
