Caption
A wood ant (Formica rufa) from up close. Wood ants are not only characteristic inhabitants of forests, but true ecosystem engineers. They reshape forests by building large ant mounds, and even change soil characteristics. Wood ant mounds serve as a habitat for more than 1,000 other species.
