The Great Unconformity (IMAGE)
Caption
Top: The Great Unconformity was formed by continental-scale erosion of ancient crystalline basement during Neoproterozoic times, followed by continental-scale sedimentation during early Phanerozoic times. Bottom: Mantle flow models predict Neoproterozoic dynamic uplift followed by Phanerozoic dynamic subsidence for Laurentia (‘LAU’), Baltica (‘BAL’) and North China (‘NCH’).
