本研究において、ミドリイシ属サンゴは約1億2千万年前に他のサンゴから分岐したことが示された。そして約6千年前に28種の新規の遺伝子ファミリーを獲得し、多くの種類の分岐に至るミドリイシ属の多様化が起こった。
