Climate Vise (VIDEO)
Caption
Bumblebee species are caught in a "climate vise", unable to expand into cold areas but unable to survive in the warmest areas. Their geographical ranges are being compressed as the populations disappear. This animation shows conceptually the impacts of upward elevation shifts that have been observed in southern areas of both Europe and North America for a hypothetical bumblebee species. The actual upward shift is taken directly from our data and has been observed between 1976 and 2010 in some instances.
