A rapids in the Volta Grande segment of the Lower Xingu River, a major Amazon tributary that is home for dozens of endemic fish species. The massive Belo Monte hydroelectric project, slated to begin operation in 2016, will divert water from the Volta Grande. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 8, 2016 issue of <i>Science</i>, published by AAAS. The paper, by K.O. Winemiller at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, and colleagues was titled, "Balancing hydropower and biodiversity in the Amazon, Congo, and Mekong."
