Close ties between the Marine Biological Laboratory and the University of Chicago extend back to the founding of both institutions. Charles O. Whitman, who became founding director of the MBL in 1888, also was a founding member of the UChicago faculty when classes began in 1892, and served as the University's first chair of zoology.
