Intravital microscopy allows the visualisation of the bone marrow cavity in the skull of mice. These images show the abundance of bone forming cells called osteoblasts (green) in healthy mice, which are important for protecting HSCs in the bone marrow. As severe infection develops, these cells steadily decrease in number until they are completely destroyed.
