IDD in Afghanistan (IMAGE) Office of Naval Research Caption Sgt. Xiong Yang gives his improvised explosive device (IED) detector dog (IDD) the command to search for explosives during a route sweep as part of Enhanced Mojave Viper training held at Twentynine Palms, Calif., prior to deploying to Afghanistan. Currently, there are 280 IDDs deployed at forward operating bases in Afghanistan, supporting counter-IED missions. A technical demonstration of IDD 2.0 is being funded by the Joint IED Defeat Organization, with ONR and the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory teaming to execute the work for the Marine Corps.
