Col. Sam Kirby, military deputy for the Office of Naval Research Expeditionary Warfare and Combating Terrorism department, takes part in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Detector Dog (IDD) 2.0 project technical demonstration during the ONR-hosted "Top Dog Demo 2012" held near Southern Pines, N.C. IDD 2.0 is being funded by the Joint IED Defeat Organization, with ONR and the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory teaming to execute the work for the Marine Corps. ONR and its partners have been working to improve the canines based on user feedback and after-action reports, in three primary areas: nutrition and physiology; stress and cognition; and olfaction, or sense of smell.
