The new paper analyzes an Antarctic ice core (black arrow at bottom) to show that Southern Ocean winds (yellow arrows) responded to rapid Arctic warming during the last ice age. Previous studies established connections between Arctic warming and ocean currents (red/blue arrows), the northern jet stream (green arrows) and tropical rain bands (green clouds).
