James D. Lechleiter, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, received a US patent for his discovery that a class of compounds is protective against traumatic brain injury. In this video provided by his laboratory, neurons are visible in red, astrocytes (caretaker cells) in green. Treated neurons and astrocytes were more likely to survive after ischemic trauma than their untreated counterparts, studies showed.
