Intertidal Barrier Trap (IMAGE)
Caption
An intertidal barrier trap, known locally as an 'atajo,' in a small estuarine inlet (Estero Palo Blanco) near Aguadulce, Coclé, Panama, 1991. These traps are now prohibited, but in former times they trapped large numbers of small fish of the kinds that are salted and dried today, and would have done so in pre-Columbian times, but with different construction materials.
