Purple Color Created with Germanium Layer on Gold (IMAGE)
Caption
Kats used a stencil to create this design on a piece of gold-coated paper. The purple areas are where germanium has been deposited on top of gold. 'Because neither the gold nor the germanium by itself is that color,' he says, 'it has to be interference.' The paper is still very lightweight and flexible.
