Fermi's Large Area Telescope sees surprising flares in Crab Nebula

Fermi's Large Area Telescope has recently detected two short-duration gamma-ray pulses coming from the Crab Nebula, which was previously believed to emit radiation at very steady rate. The pulses were fueled by the most energetic particles ever traced to a discrete astronomical object.

From dusty punch cards, new insights into link between cholesterol and heart disease

A stack of punch cards from a landmark study published in 1966, and the legwork to track down the study's participants years later, has yielded the longest analysis of the effects of lipoproteins on coronary heart disease. The study tracked almost 1,900 people over a 29-year period, which is nearly three times longer than other studies that examine the link between different sizes of high-density lipoprotein particles and heart disease.

Learning to read the genome

As part of the National Institutes of Health's "model organism Encyclopedia of DNA Elements" (modENCODE) project, teams led by researchers at the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have made major advances in understanding the complex relationships between the Drosophila genome, as recorded by DNA and RNA base pairs, and the patterns and physical organization of its chromosomes. These insights into reading the genome will apply to many organisms, including human beings.

Strange new twist: Berkeley researchers discover Möbius symmetry in metamaterials

Into the ice: Completing the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

With the sinking of the last of 86 strings carrying over 5,000 photodetectors a mile and a half deep in the Antarctic ice, IceCube, the world's most sensitive neutrino detector, is now complete. The electronics and packaging of the photodetectors, called Digital Optical Modules, were conceived, designed, and tested by scientists and engineers at the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Tiny channels carry big information

Berkeley Lab researchers have been able to fabricate nanochannels that are only two nanometers in size, using standard semiconductor manufacturing processes. Already they've discovered that fluid mechanics for passages this small are significantly different not only from bulk-sized channels, but even from channels that are merely 10 nanometers in size.

And to avoid using paper towels each time he visits the bathroom, he keeps a hand towel in his office. Those are only a few of the things he does to reduce his carbon footprint—and that's just at work.
