Let’s get cracking: Sandia scientists detect gases from fractured rock
DOE/Sandia National Laboratories
Geoscientists have detected specific gases being released from fractured rocks in real time after a series of small chemical explosions set underground. This fundamental research, led by Sandia National Laboratories geoscientist Steve Bauer, could one day improve the prediction of earthquakes or detection of underground explosions.

An unlikely plan is helping the U.S. fast-track hypersonic conventional weapons
DOE/Sandia National Laboratories
Sandia National Laboratories has piloted a new way to transfer technical designs to defense contractors for the common hypersonic glide body, which detaches from a rocket and soars at speeds above Mach 5.

Testing coatings to conserve canisters against corrosion
DOE/Sandia National Laboratories
To shield steel from the corrosive threats posed by sea air, Sandia National Laboratories researchers tested a variety of nickel mixtures as protective coatings on stainless steel. The researchers found that the specific material applied, and the specific application process used, impacted the properties of the coating, including how protective it was against corrosion.

Gone for good? California’s beetle-killed, carbon-storing pine forests may not come back
DOE/Los Alamos National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Ponderosa pine forests in the Sierra Nevada that were wiped out by western pine beetles during the 2012-2015 megadrought won’t recover to pre-drought densities, reducing an important storehouse for atmospheric carbon.

Ultrafast beam-steering breakthrough at Sandia National Labs
DOE/Sandia National LaboratoriesPeer-Reviewed Publication
Researchers show for the first time that incoherent light emitted by most light sources — incandescent bulbs, LEDs, flashlights— can be reconstituted as a focused, steerable beam of light much like lasers.

Qubits put new spin on magnetism: Boosting applications of quantum computers
DOE/Los Alamos National LaboratoryPeer-Reviewed Publication
Research using a quantum computer as the physical platform for quantum experiments has found a way to design and characterize tailor-made magnetic objects using quantum bits, or qubits. That opens up a new approach to develop new materials and robust quantum computing.
