Introduction & Background

Precise manipulation of the phase, polarization, and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light allows the construction of high-dimensional structured light fields, including vortex, vector, and cylindrical vector beams. These complex fields possess unique spatial profiles and orthogonal information dimensions, exhibiting profound application potential in high-capacity optical communications, micro-optical manipulation, and quantum information processing.

Conventionally, the generation and dynamic reconfiguration of such complex vectorial wavefronts heavily depend on discrete free-space optical components, such as spatial light modulators (SLMs), multi-stage waveplate arrays, and polarizers. These discrete setups inevitably lead to bulky system footprints, strict alignment tolerances, and vulnerability to environmental perturbations, thereby impeding deep integration with modern photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Although recent advances in silicon photonics have attempted to miniaturize these devices, existing on-chip solutions are primarily restricted to single-mode waveguide excitation and suffer from the intrinsic physical coupling between spatial wavefronts and polarization degrees of freedom. Consequently, achieving full-surface dynamic reconfiguration across various Poincaré spheres on a single integrated chip remains a major challenge.

Innovative Breakthroughs

To address these technical bottlenecks, the research team led by Prof. Minming Zhang and Assoc. Prof. Shuang Zheng from Huazhong University of Science and Technology proposed and experimentally demonstrated a fully tunable on-chip structured light meta-generator. By exploiting inverse-designed multi-mode meta-waveguides and multi-channel coherent phase-amplitude control, the team achieved breakthroughs in two core dimensions:

1. Waveguide Mode Multiplexing for Enhanced Modal Capacity

Conventional on-chip OAM generators typically operate with a single fundamental waveguide mode (e.g., TE0), which deeply limits the output topological charge diversity. This work introduces a high-fidelity mode conversion and multiplexing network at the input stage, enabling higher-order waveguiding modes (such as TE0 and TE1) to serve as independent, parallel coherent channels. Utilizing the distinct dispersion characteristics of multi-mode waveguides and inverse-optimized subwavelength meta-waveguide gratings, the chip achieves the simultaneous or selective emission of multi-mode OAM beams with various topological charges from a single integrated aperture, significantly expanding the on-chip structured light base.

2. Full-Surface Dynamic Remapping Across Diverse Poincaré Spheres

The core milestone of this work is the complete uncoupling of spatial wavefront shaping and polarization state synthesis. The chip integrates a thermo-optic phase-shifter tuning array that independently dictates the amplitude and relative phase of the outgoing orthogonal components. This feature not only allows the synthesis of basic linear, circular, and elliptical polarizations, but also enables the generation of inhomogeneous cylindrical vector fields. More importantly, by linearly modifying the driving electrical control signals to alter the Stokes parameters, the system successfully steers and stabilizes the output light fields toward any arbitrary coordinate point on multiple distinct Poincaré spheres—including polarization, OAM, high-order, and hybrid-order Poincaré spheres.

3. Expansion to High-Dimensional Informatics and Topological Optics

Beyond conventional single-sphere state generation, the proposed platform exhibits powerful extensibility toward higher-dimensional parameter spaces. By coherently superimposing the fundamental states extracted from different high-order Poincaré spheres, the researchers synthesized representative complex light fields within a four-dimensional parameter domain. This proves that the platform can function as a programmable generator for high-dimensional structured light, providing a robust micro-integrated hardware foundation for high-capacity space-division multiplexing communications and reconfigurable high-dimensional quantum photonics. Furthermore, its ability to co-manipulate vector light fields across different spheres opens up new possibilities for tailoring custom topological optical structures, such as optical skyrmions.

Future Outlook

This work successfully condenses the full-degree-of-freedom control of complex structured light into a silicon photonic chip with a millimeter-scale footprint. Compared to traditional free-space optical frameworks, this solution offers outstanding advantages in terms of compact structural footprint, high mechanical stability, multi-dimensional tunability, and scalable architectural expandability. Looking ahead, with the prospective on-chip co-integration of high-speed modulators, laser sources, detectors, and quantum emitters, this platform is expected to evolve into a fully self-contained on-chip structured light system, playing a pivotal role in high-dimensional optical interconnects, precision metrology, quantum integrated optics, and advanced optical information processing.
