A research team led by Prof. Yi Sun at Zhejiang University, reported a unexpected finding that the combination of KrasG12D activation and genetic inactivation of UBE2M in the lung triggers the cGAS-STING-NF-κB signal to form a inflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME). Mechnistically, KrasG12D promotes the mitochondrial biogenesis, whereas UBE2M depletion inhibits Parkin neddylation and mitophagy, together causing the cytoplasmic release of damaged mitochondrial DNA. The STING antagonist H-151 rescues TME, indicating a causal role of the cGAS-STING signal. The study therefore demonstrates a unexpected role of UBE2M in prevention TME induced by Kras mutant.
The review was led by Prof. Shaorong Gao of Tongji University, in collaboration with researchers from multiple universities and research institutes across China. It examines how epigenetic mechanisms decide which genes are used, when they are used and how strongly they are expressed - from the earliest stages of development to aging, cancer and therapy.
Bringing together evidence from reproduction, embryonic development, stem-cell research, tissue maintenance, aging, cancer and clinical translation, the review assesses what these mechanisms may mean for reproductive medicine, regenerative medicine and precision treatment. It also distinguishes promising directions from interventions that still require stronger evidence on delivery, specificity and long-term safety.
In a paper published in SCIENCE CHINA Earth Sciences, researchers at Sun Yat-sen University developed an SFA-based Climate Prediction (SCP) method, which directly extracted slow-varying predictable signals from observed precipitation data and applied it to seasonal prediction of summer precipitation over South China. Independent forecasts for 2011–2022 show that the SCP method achieves a regional mean temporal correlation coefficient of 0.36 and accurately predicted the sign of regional-mean precipitation anomalies in 10 of 12 summers, outperforming two dynamical models and a hybrid dynamical–statistical prediction system. The study provides a new perspective to identifying potentially predictable signals and improving regional seasonal precipitation prediction.
Robots often learn from historical experience collected under older controllers and physical conditions. When tasks, hardware or environments change, that data can become misleading. Researchers developed Occupancy-Matching Policy Optimization (OMPO), which anchors large replay buffers to a small set of recent interactions. Across locomotion, transfer, manipulation and a real-robot test, OMPO improved stability, sample efficiency and adaptation.
A recent study published in the National Science Review reveals that the tradition of wrapping grains in leaves may date back as far as 2,200 years ago. Leaf-wrapped plant bundles unearthed at the Wuwangdun Site—believed to have served as funerary offerings—are now considered an early precursor to zongzi, the iconic traditional Chinese food enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival.
Researchers from Zhejiang University and other institutions conducted a systematic study on intrinsic defects in half-Heusler compounds—a big family of functional materials. They have discovered a new type of planar defect, named “filling fault,” along with the associated vacancy swap occupation. Their work clarifies the long-standing contradiction regarding defect types and atomic occupation in half-Heusler compounds. They elucidate the formation rules of filling faults across different compositions and reveal the mechanisms by which this novel planar defect influences carrier transport and piezoelectric response. These findings offer new perspectives for the design of functional materials.
Researchers have developed a wide-field Fourier transform hyperspectral imaging system that captures electrochemical reactions on hundreds of individual nanoparticles simultaneously. By integrating a common-path interferometer with a fast 2D camera, the method provides real-time spectral evolution during electrodeposition of palladium and cadmium sulfide on gold nanoparticles. Statistical analysis reveals distinct deposition behaviors on nanospheres versus nanorods—insights that would require thousands of tedious single-particle measurements using conventional approaches.
Researchers have developed a compact, built-in neutron analyzer for on-site measurement of uranium loading and element changes in wet ion-exchange resins. The 80 kg system combines prompt fission-neutron counting with prompt-gamma spectroscopy. Laboratory tests yielded a 0.129 g/L uranium detection limit in 60 s, while a field campaign at a commercial in-situ recovery mine followed adsorption, elution, transformation and a second adsorption cycle.
