Recognizing ecosystems as legitimate water users alongside humans, researchers conducted the first global assessment of ecological water scarcity across 1,182 river basins. In the 2000s, 412 basins (35%) experienced ecological water scarcity. Human interventions contributed to 53% of seasonal and 60% of annual ecological water scarcity cases. Future risks are expected to persist, highlighting the importance of climate change mitigation and environmental flow protection.
Researchers developed a plasma-ultrasound catalytic (PUC) process that directly converts air and phenol into high-value nitroaromatic chemicals under mild conditions, demonstrating a new and promising paradigm for the efficient and selective synthesis of valuable C–N–O chemicals.
Protein lactylation may influence cancer in different ways depending on where it occurs within a cell. In a review published in SCIENCE CHINA Life Sciences, researchers from Capital Medical University and Tongji Hospital of Tongji University bring together evidence from the nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, cell membrane, and endomembrane system. The authors examine lactylation writers, readers, and erasers, discuss its links to tumor progression, immune evasion, and treatment resistance, and explore unanswered questions and potential therapeutic strategies.
Researchers have developed a titanium carbide-supported copper single-atom catalyst that enables carbon dioxide to couple directly with a nitrate-reduction intermediate for urea electrosynthesis. Strong copper–titanium carbide interactions regulate Cu 3d-orbital occupancy, directing partial electron transfer to CO2 and stabilizing the *CO2δ– intermediate instead of driving further reduction to *CO. Meanwhile, neighboring Ti sites generate *NO2 from nitrate, enabling direct C–N coupling between *CO2δ– and *NO2. The catalyst achieves 97.8% carbon selectivity and 50.1% Faradaic efficiency.
By discovering a metastable C–Mo–O/Ni interface that acts as a dynamic oxygen regulator, a research team has unlocked an O*-assisted pathway for efficient methane activation, achieving near-quantitative syngas selectivity and exceptional anti-oxidation stability.
