Cancer ‘fingerprint’ can improve early detection

Different types of cancer have unique molecular ‘fingerprints’ which are detectable in early stages of the disease and can be picked up with near-perfect accuracy by small, portable scanners in just a few hours, according to a study published today in the journal Molecular Cell. The discovery by researchers at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona sets the foundation for creating new, non-invasive diagnostic tests that detect different types of cancer faster and earlier than currently possible.

Gene variant common in individuals of African ancestry may lead to reduced metabolism of the thiopurine class of drugs

Mayo Clinic researchers found that a gene variant, the TPMT∗8 allele, is associated with reduced metabolism of the thiopurine class of drugs. TPMT∗8 is relatively common in individuals of African or African American descent. A novel study in The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, published by Elsevier, details the researchers' goal to provide pharmacogenomic testing that can be used clinically to predict drug response that is beneficial to all patients, regardless of their ancestral background.

Late-breaking research reveals there is no benefit from high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) for patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in remission following their initial treatment. The finding is from the phase 3 study EA4151, by the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group (ECOG-ACRIN), presented December 10th at the 66th American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego.
