SwRI, UT San Antonio collaborate to advance smart biosensors for improved CAR T-cell production

SAN ANTONIO — September 15, 2025— Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) are advancing a smart biosensor coating to streamline the production of immunotherapies for cancer treatments. Researchers plan to use novel biosensor coatings to enable automated processes and reduce human errors and costs associated with their production.

Bar-Ilan University and Sheba Medical Center are establishing a $120 million joint biotech research institute at Sheba’s new Health Tech Valley in Ramat Gan. Modeled after the U.S. NIH, the institute will bridge academia, healthcare, and industry to accelerate the translation of lab discoveries into clinical treatments. Research will focus on cancer, 3D organ printing, AI-driven medical data, robotics, genetic engineering, and microbiome science, with the aim of fast-tracking personalized medicine, new drugs, and advanced devices.

Leaders from both institutions stressed the institute’s role in positioning Israel as a global hub for biotech innovation, a magnet for billions in investment, and a powerful growth engine for the economy.

Researchers develop proximity labeling based antigen amplification technology

A research team led by Prof. HAN Shuo from the Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a novel cell-surface protein engineering strategy called Proximity Amplification and Tagging of Cytotoxic Haptens (PATCH), which applies proximity labeling to immunomodulation for the first time.

Rice scientists develop ‘molecular magnifying glass’ to help identify diseases earlier

A novel strategy developed at Rice University allows scientists to zoom in on tiny segments of proteins inside living cells, revealing localized environmental changes that could indicate the earliest stages of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer.
