International experts set to advise early treatment for atrial fibrillation
Meeting Announcement
Screening, early treatment, and personalised therapy for atrial fibrillation are on the agenda of an international meeting starting today. The 8th joint consensus conference of the German Atrial Fibrillation NETwork (AFNET) and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), a branch of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), is being held from 12 to 14 October at the Dorint Hotel Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting more than 40 million individuals globally. In many patients the condition is asymptomatic and the first manifestation is a debilitating stroke, heart failure, or a blackout. Early diagnosis, oral anticoagulation, and early rhythm control therapy are key concepts to prevent these complications. They will be discussed by over 60 international experts in atrial fibrillation in light of new data.
The COVID-19 pandemic revolutionised the uptake of digital technologies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Sign up for the ESC Digital Summit 2021 to hear how cardiology is modernising to face the challenges of a post-pandemic world. “The ESC – along with patient advocates, technology companies and others – has been front and centre in supporting the need for this ‘techcelleration’,” said Professor Martin Cowie, Chairperson of the ESC Digital Health Committee. “Healthcare professionals and patients are now much more familiar with remote consultation and remote monitoring. But this conference is about state-of-the-art tools including Apps and wearables (m-health), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for decision support, virtual and augmented reality, and robotics.”
This year’s annual scientific meeting of the Human Brain Project takes place online, on 14 and 15 October. The meeting will provide an open forum for hundreds of researchers, as well as policy makers, media and public, to discuss the latest developments in Europe’s largest brain science project.
The correlation between poor oral health and COVID-19 severity, as well as the correlation between oral health and delayed recovery, demonstrates a potential need to consider oral health an additional risk factor for cardiac patients who may contract COVID-19. The new sub-study, examining Egyptian cardiac patients, will be presented at ACC Middle East 2021, a hybrid meeting held in partnership by the American College of Cardiology, Egyptian Society of Cardiology and the ACC Egypt Chapter on Oct. 14-15, 2021.
