Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) control the rapid flow of materials between a cell’s nucleus and its cytoplasm, but its innerworkings have long remained a mystery. Now researchers have unveiled the most complete picture yet of how NPCs make split-second decisions about which molecules to let pass through. The model opens new avenues for medical and biotech innovation, including therapeutics for NPC-associated genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s and ALS.
