The Monell Chemical Senses Center and the A*STAR Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation are about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote academic cooperation and exchange in education and research, with the vision of creating a healthier world by unlocking the mysteries of our senses. The MOU provides a framework to explore research that benefits both academic and industry science, including engaging in joint science and shared scientific publications, joint funding opportunities, and exchange of scientists and staff for training. 

The study asks nearly 1800 children which notable people in computing they are aware of.

In a paper published today in American Educational Research Association Open, Sean Darling-Hammond, a UC Berkeley Assistant Professor, and Eric Ho, a statistician at the U.S. Department of Education, lay out the case that Black students across the country in K-12 education are experiencing scholastic punishment far more often than their peers. By looking across many types of punishment, student subpopulations, measures of disparity, and comparison groups, the authors arrive at the conclusion that, as the article title states, “No matter how you slice it, Black students are punished more.” They also find that while disparities are widespread, they are larger in some contexts than one might expect.

A new study published today in JAMA reveals text message reminders for patients who delay refilling their medications didn’t help improve how regularly they refilled medications over a year.

The study enrolled over 9,000 patients in a randomized pragmatic clinical trial and included representation from a diverse population across subgroups, including females, Hispanic ethnicity and Spanish-speaking patients, all groups who can be traditionally underrepresented in clinical trials.

“There are a lot of studies that focus on using technology to improve healthcare behaviors. However, it’s unclear and under-studied whether text message reminders are effective for a sustained period, given they have become a commonly used practice in healthcare settings. That’s one of the reasons why we wanted to focus on text message reminders for refilling medication in this study, which we were hoping would also decrease serious health issues,” said first author Michael Ho, MD, professor adjoint in the department of medicine and cardiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus will receive up to $46 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Transplantation of Human Eye Allografts (THEA) program to advance pioneering research aimed at curing total blindness through human eye transplantation.
