UT Arlington biologist discovers new species of gecko

A team of biologists led by The University of Texas at Arlington has discovered a new tiny lizard species in the Paria Peninsula of northeastern Venezuela. This discovery, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, highlights the unique characteristics of this gecko, including its small size (about 2.5 inches long), brown color, cone-shaped head, long snout and particular skull anatomy.

Socioeconomic status during early pregnancy may play a large role in future heart health

Socioeconomic status — education level, income level, health insurance status and health literacy — of pregnant individuals was responsible for more than half of the long-term heart health disparities among Black, Hispanic and white women, according to a new study.

Obesity-related heart disease deaths increased in the US over the past two decades

An analysis of data from the CDC’s WONDER database found that the number of people in the U.S. who died from ischemic heart disease related to obesity increased by approximately 180% from 1999 to 2020. The highest rate of deaths from ischemic heart disease related to obesity were noted among middle-aged men ages 55-64, Black adults and people who live in the Midwestern states and non-metropolitan areas in the U.S.

Cardiac arrest survival improved since COVID-19 pandemic waned, still lower than prior years

Heart disease more common in past redlined areas linked to limited access to healthy foods

Heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity were more common and linked to reduced access to healthy food among people who lived in neighborhoods previously subjected to structural racism-based policies that limited home ownership — an outlawed practice known as redlining.
