What past global warming reveals about future rainfall

A study reconstructs rainfall patterns during the extreme warming during the early Paleogene Period, 66 to 48 millions years ago. Conducted by University of Utah atmospheric scientists and Colorado School of Mines geologists, the research examined “proxies” in the geologic record and drew conclusions that suggest rainfall becomes more intense, but more irregular when Earth gets hot.

Important new source of oxidation in the atmosphere found

Hydroperoxides are strong oxidants that have a significant influence on chemical processes in the atmosphere. Now, an international research team involving the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) has shown that these substances also form from α‑keto acids such as pyruvic acid in clouds, rain and aerosol water when exposed to sunlight. These reactions could be responsible for 5 to 15 percent of the observed atmospheric hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in the aqueous phase. This means that the photolysis of α-keto acids has now been identified as another important source of atmospheric oxidants, the researchers write in Science Advances, the open-access journal of the renowned scientific journal SCIENCE. Since these oxidation processes influence both the formation and degradation of particles and air pollutants, the newly discovered reaction pathway is of great importance for air quality and climate forecasts.

Progress in weather analysis opens the way to tangible benefits for society, including protecting lives and infrastructure through extreme event monitoring and early warning services. By training deep learning models to detect storm patterns in satellite images, the team of CMCC scientists has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence and satellite technology. The deep learning approach, combined with 24/7 satellite monitoring, enables the identification of where lightning is likely to occur, boosting the effectiveness and timeliness of weather alerts. “This research opens a new direction for severe-weather monitoring and nowcasting,” the scientists say, commenting on the research, which is an outcome of an initiative of the Italian government, in collaboration with the European Space Agency, and the full exploitation of CMCC's high-performance computing infrastructure, which provided the computational resources needed to train the deep-learning model on a large dataset.
