The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995 prompted the government to establish a nationwide network to monitor seismic activity, and this unparalleled and sophisticated observation system is making it possible to instantaneously detect the changes occurring underground. Professor YOSHIOKA Shoichi of the Research Center for Urban Safety and Security is an expert in seismology and analyzes the data obtained from the network as he takes on the challenge of shedding light on the mechanism of major earthquakes. We asked him about his research which aims to unravel the mystery of how earthquakes occur by focusing on subsurface temperature structures and slow slip events that happen at the boundary between tectonic plates.

Building on a long history of successful collaboration, Washington University in St. Louis and the Missouri Botanical Garden are welcoming two internationally recognized botanists who will have joint appointments with both research institutions. Lúcia Lohmann, a botanist and conservationist known for her extensive research in the Amazonian rainforest, became president and director of the Missouri Botanical Garden Jan. 2. She will also be the George Engelmann Professor of Botany in the Department of Biology in Arts & Sciences. Toby Pennington, a leader in the study of dry tropical forests, will be the inaugural David and Dorothy Kemper Professor in the Department of Biology, a joint appointment with the university and the garden. He starts Aug. 1.

A new method based on optical interferometry, to monitor structural damage to buildings hit by earthquakes in real time. This is the outcome of the Foresight research project, led by the Politecnico di Milano and carried out together with INRiM – the National Metrology Institute of Italy and INGV – the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

The researchers want to exploit the fibre optic systems already in homes to provide an Internet connection, and use them to check the condition of buildings after an earthquake – especially in the period immediately following the first shocks.
