Whether it’s about the weather, delays on public transport, or people backing out of plans – we complain daily. Now, researchers investigated if these complaints sound different depending on which culture we grew up in. Investigating two French-speaking cultures, they found that complaints were delivered differently and that Québécois sounded angrier whereas the French sounded sadder. While there may be an universal complaining tone of voice, cultural variations could show learned social conventions, embedded into us by the culture we grew up in, the researchers said.
Larger ants generally develop into queens, while smaller ants develop into workers. Environmental factors, such as caregiver behavior, temperature and food availability, can determine caste by influencing how large larvae grow. However, it has been unclear whether these environmental factors can influence caste independently of body size. This study finds that size and caste are developmentally tightly coupled. Genes determine the size threshold for becoming a queen, which means that genetics not only influence size—they change what a given size means for the caste development of an individual.
