Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer. It kills more people in the U.S. than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. When lung adenocarcinoma, the most common primary lung cancer in the U.S., grows into nearby blood vessels (a process called vascular invasion), the tumor is more likely to recur even if surgically removed. Pathologists can identify areas of vascular invasion post-operatively, but surgeons could perform more extensive surgery to lower the risk of recurrence if they could predict which tumors were more likely to have vascular invasion.

 

Researchers from Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine believe they have, for the first time, identified genes whose activity changes in lung tumors with vascular invasion. Additionally, they also discovered that they could detect these changes in small pieces of the tumor collected during a presurgical biopsy procedure.  

Researchers analyzed data from the U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a national telephone survey, to better understand how social isolation and physical isolation intersect with material deprivation, including financial strain and inadequate health care access. The study examined six preventive services: COVID-19, flu and pneumococcal vaccination, and breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings. 

About The Study: In this study, a decrease in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence was observed among individuals with negative results in screening colonoscopies, with a greater decrease in men, supporting risk-based, individualized follow-up strategies. A high-risk group for CRC was identified among individuals who did not adhere to follow-up colonoscopy, enabling targeted interventions to improve early CRC detection.

When someone is diagnosed with colorectal cancer — which includes both colon and rectal cancers — many people immediately think "surgery." And it’s true that surgery plays a central role in treatment for most patients. But whether it comes first, and what it entails, depends on several factors, especially where the cancer is located, how far it has grown into surrounding tissues, and whether it has spread, explains Eric Dozois, M.D., chair of colon and rectal surgery at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Detection of a bowel cancer marker (CDH1) in wastewater may offer a new community level early warning system for the disease, suggests a proof of concept study published online in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.

About The Study: This cross-sectional analysis found that delays in treatment initiation for early-onset colorectal cancer—often exceeding 90 days—were more common in all-urban populations and appeared to disproportionately affect young male, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black, or Hispanic patients. Although absolute differences in average treatment timing were modest, the focus in this study on clinically relevant delay thresholds (30, 60, and 90 days) is supported by recent meta-analytic literature. The consistency of these delays across sociodemographic groups challenges assumptions of uniformly timely access in urban settings.
